Fluoroscopy
Fluoroscopy is a medical imaging technique that shows a continuous x-ray of the body like an x-ray movie. This enables the technician and radiologist to view x-ray images in real time. Fluoroscopy scans are used to diagnose medical conditions relating to bones, muscles, digestive tract, respiratory, reproductive systems, kidneys and bladder, joints and to perform minor operative procedures
Preparing for your examination
Please be aware that all Fluoroscopy examinations require an appointment and there may be specific preparation depending on your examination. Please call us to arrange a time and discuss your examination.
What to bring:
- A referral from your GP or specialist
- Medicare card
- Pension/concession card
- Previous films from other clinics relating to the area being scanned with us
Please tell us if you are pregnant or breastfeeding.
Reasons for Fluoroscopy
Fluoroscopy is used for many different examinations to different regions of the body, these include:
- To assess swallowing or the transit of foods
- To guide the introduction of needles into joints, and
- To image the urinary tract or reproductive system
What to expect
On arrival, depending on your examination you may be asked to fill out a questionnaire or consent form. You may be provided with a gown to wear instead of your own clothes. You will be asked to remove:
- All metal objects including
- Jewellery
- Glasses
- Dentures
- Hearing aids
In the imaging room, you will be helped onto a padded table. A machine will be moved over your body to see the region of interest. Our friendly staff will be in the imaging room and will explain what will happen.
Our equipment utilises the latest radiation reduction techniques and the risks at these exposure levels are thought to be very small and outweighed by the information obtained by performing the scan.
When can you get your results?
The images obtained are digitally recorded. At Gympie Radiology our highly trained and qualified Radiologists interpret the images and provides a report for your doctor and/or referring health care provider within 24 hours, although usually within a couple of hours depending on the complexity of the scan.
You will be able to take your images on the day or collect them at a time that is convenient for you. You may need to make a follow up appointment to discuss the results with your referring practitioner.
